In 10 and 30 degree weather I wear the same hiking clothes and hiking boots that I wear in 90 degree weather. I just add more layers, heavier socks, gloves, and a hat. The layers are made from fabric that wicks moisture away from my body. Cotton fabric holds on to moisture and takes longer to dry so many people avoid hiking in anything made of cotton, especially if they perspire heavily.

My favorite hiking boot is a Lowa Renegade. I even wear them with snowshoes. Kahtoola Microspikes came out about 15 years ago and I won't leave home without them, even in Virginia! They are expensive, but have a 2 year warranty and last forever.
